The real origins of Canna

Monday, March 17th, 2008

The question has often been asked, “How can we be so sure that Cannas originated in South America?” We do know that the first Cannas introduced to Europe were C. indica L., and although they all came to Europe from the East Indies, they originated from the American continent. Charles de l’Ecluse, who first described and sketched C. indica in his Histoire des plantes rare observ

The Simpsons Movie (2007, *** 1/2)

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

While it’s taken eighteen years to get blown up to movie scale, the marketing of The Simpsons Movie has taken twists and turns the past few weeks, with a screening in time for most reviewers’ deadlines added only at the end of last week. Fox has in the past few years withheld bad movies from reviewers until the last minute, the rumored reason here was to prevent all the jokes from getting repeated. While the jokes are nonstop from the first frame to the last, if you read five reviews and each give away five jokes with context, there’s twenty-five little “oof!s” you’ll no longer have in the dark with a paying, tickled audience.

The question of spoilers in general came up in a Sunday op-ed by Village Voice writer Nathan Lee (whose passionately empurpled prose is also featured in Film Comment), in which he rows for spoilers. Of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” early reviews in the Baltimore Sun and the New York Times, Lee writes, “Personally, I couldn’t care less about the fate of the neurotic boy wizard. Professionally—as a film critic who might be assigned to review the movie version someday I hope he croaks. I’m a sucker for bleak endings… I’m that terrible thing, the film critic [who isn’t afraid to use spoilers]… [T]here isn’t a single frame of The Number 23 I wouldn’t mock in great, guiltless detail… I’m confident that my readership does not include humorless scholars of the Joel Schumacher oeuvre. To spoil or not to spoil involves larger questions about the role of the critic, the needs of the reader and the changes to both caused by the scale, speed and outlaw spirit of Web-based commentary…”
The piece is worth the read if your interest is sparked. His ruminations run deeper than, say, “If Maggie were to speak her first words, should you tell?”

While almost all of roaring 88 minutes of The Simpsons Movie was fresh to me, the reason why is also the reason why some fast-moving bits and details were lost to me: I’ve seldom seen more than five minutes of any given episode in all its years on the air. A younger friend of mine, a morbid joker, is always amused to bring up the rationale I gave her: with a broken leg, dengue fever or a long, terminal illness, I would have dozens of hours of “The Simpsons” to while away the eon (Four hundred episodes, twenty-two minutes each…) More practically, I stopped watching cable and broadcast television altogether for several years as part of a pledge after some seismic personal shifts. After that, watching anything filled with commercial breaks grated. (Series on DVD: different affair.)

A reviewer’s personal context as a confessional form of dancing around the plot: yes, there is a plot, about love and family and saving the planet (with a score by hero-scoring Hans Zimmer) and the most inspired throwaway joke is orthographic, approximately so: “, _____________.” The credits, as would be expected, nay, demanded, are rewarding to watch to the very end. (If you leave, you’ll never understand what “Spider-Pig (Chorale)” means.) The script, credited to “Simpsons” veterans James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean, Ian Maxstone-Graham, George Meyer, David Mirkin, Mike Reiss, Mike Scully, Matt Selman, John Swartzwelder and Jon Vitti leans heavily on irreverence but gratifyingly more so on verbal absurdity.

Even out of context, lines honed to silly perfection have a precision to be admired—skip to the next paragraph if you don’t want anything given away. “I can’t believe everyone in this theater is paying $10 for something they can see for free on TV”; “This Book doesn’t have any answers”; “I’ll teach you to laugh at something that’s funny!”; ”If you can find a greasier sandwich, you’re in Mexico”; “I miss Danny DeVito”; “That could be anyone’s pig crap silo”; “What’s that ominous glow in the distance” and “The top of his head is still showing, claw at it,” are memorable, as are intermittent bursts of animal cruelty, including a lot of business with cats and a burst of penguinicide.

A few notable, arcane references and parallels: The Fox opening logo has an homage to the gag that opens Frank Tashlin’s immortal Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?; a sequence scored to a Carpenters song has all the moony yet moving sap of similar usages in Todd Haynes’ Superstar; a terrific frame seen from atop a hillside of a city in flames being bombarded by helicopters matches exactly the last shot of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Charisma”; and a sustained shot in the naked skateboarding scene shows gratifying invention, as does Bart’s opening chalkboard session. My keenest, dearest piece of advice: if you want to see it, see it cold, and leave at home the know-it-all who will spurt with laughter at even the gags he or she doesn’t understand.

Okay, Okay, Okay…I know. I am a video fiend. But I promise (promise promise) I’m planning an update with words. Real words, and not just words that lead up to a video.
This is not that update.
But, this may be one of the funniest (and genuine) series of commercials I’ve ever seen. The comedy is entirely in their poor choice of product name, and if you haven’t seen them yet, enjoy:

Taste, chew, and Enjoy!

Try new peanut butter Ayds! I wonder why this stuff isn’t around anymore!

Thank goodness, indeed! This next one I find funny mostly because of the images they use…

I’m going to go get myself some Ayds today!

At the risk of beating a dead horse…

To clarify my Questioning Objectification post, I’d like to emphasize that I think it is very bad for sexuality to be imposed upon women in an inappropriate context. My point is that it is far easier to tackle inappropriate sexual treatment if you’re holding in your other hand a clear model of what constitutes appropriate sexual expression.

Men can understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Just because it’s okay for a given man to fondle his wife or girlfriend in the privacy of their bedroom, he will not immediately assume that means it’s okay for him to fondle strangers on the bus. The fact that it’s okay to stare at an image on a screen won’t make a man automatically assume that it’s okay to stare at a colleague’s chest at work or to make unwanted comments about the bodies of platonic friends.

Much of our culture gives young guys the following message: “The morality police don’t want you looking at sexy women at all,” with the accompanying flip-side message “but, hey, it’s a guy thing…”

Feminists who view sexuality in terms of objectification are promoting exactly the same message. Behaviors that should be denounced as harassment are held up as some sort of proof that sexuality is fundamentally about men using women, as if harassment were an inseparable component of male sexuality.

But when a woman chooses to step up on stage and deliberately promotes her sex-appeal as part of her act, there’s a big difference between seeking out such fare as part of one’s leisure entertainment versus imposing sexual attention on women who don’t want it. Feminists should be the vanguard of emphasizing this distinction.

Now the attentive feminist will be pointing out that the consent of the performer alone is not always a sufficient measure of whether a sexualized image is appropriate. For example, in the media it’s often a problem that a man in a non-sexual role is expected to look stately and wise, whereas a woman in the same role is required to look young and beautiful. This disparity shows up in newscasters as well as in the portrayal of parents in sitcoms (as I discussed here). Such cases can be analyzed and treated more effectively based on a rational theory of expecting the media to present a balanced and realistic portrayal of women as whole people — a portrayal that includes sexuality as well as including females who are interesting and esteemed for qualities other than beauty. We’ll never get anywhere on such problems if we base our feminist analysis on the irrational and utterly worthless theory that displays of sexuality degrade women and place them in an inferior position.

Johnson & Johnson’s BabyCenter Web site expands to China

Johnson & Johnson member-company BabyCenter LLC is expanding to China, it reports. The Web site BabyCenter China will give more than 56 million new and expectant mothers access to prenatal and parenting information and resources, as well as an online community. The U.S version of BabyCenter reaches 78% of all new and expecting moms in the United States in a year and is the category leader in online parenting sites in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. In 2007, it’s estimated that there will be 20 million babies born in China–five times as many as in the United States. BabyCenter China will give those new parents access to stage-based content and resources, including a pregnancy calendar and e-mail newsletters with personalized fetal, baby, or child development information.

Dallas Video Festival: Bust a move

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

The Dallas Video Festival churns along tonight and continues through Sunday. Tonight’s Vognarian pick: Inside the Circle, a documentary about two breakdancing friends and the separate ways life leads them. B-boying doesn’t really get its due anymore, but to me it’s still a vital and incredibly difficult element of hip-hop culture. Marcy Garriott’s doc also features music by local hip-hop artists including Bavu Blakes - a former Dallas Morning News intern-turned rap genius - and Hydroponic Sound System, led by producer/Quick contributor/radio personality Skin. Bust a move to the Angelika tonight at 9:15 to check it out.

Prisoners of science!

Isn’t willow-bark tea enough?

Modern medicine is unfortunately rather corporate and impersonal. A lot of this has to do with our nation’s unwillingness to take health care seriously, leaving it as a patchwork quilt of profit-driven HMOs and haphazard public-sector programs. It’s regrettable and not likely to be fixed any time soon.

There’s another aspect, though, thrown into high relief by paranoid outcries like a letter in today’s San Francisco Chronicle. When the newspaper ran a human-interest story about a poodle who spends time cheering up young patients at UCSF’s Children’s Hospital, one reader’s reaction was to issue a denunciation. Apparently science and medicine are evil. Or cruel. Something like that.Spare us cutesy stuff

Editor — I cannot get your May 19 story about Izzy the poodle at UCSF out of my mind.

Could The Chronicle editors please spare its readers this sort of cutesy, upbeat reporting, where a happy face is painted on a tragedy?

The idea that a dog “brings joy to patients” is negated by the reality of the heart-rending accompanying photos of suffering children held hostage to illness, science and the medical-pharmaceutical industry.

Jane Q. Kennedy
San FranciscoI have no reason to question Ms. Kennedy’s sincerity, which rings out from her hand-wringing prose, but what would she prefer to see? Should the young cancer patients be sipping herbal tea instead while sniffing aromatherapy candles and listening to Enya? That would be the very picture of tranquility.

Of course, they’d die.

The sad truth is that many of these kids will die anyway. Leukemia killed two of my cousins, despite the best that modern medicine could do at the time. One of them went very quickly. The other gained an additional ten years of life before a recurrence took her away from us. Both had difficult times during treatment and chemotherapy. I wish they could have been spared that suffering. Ms. Kennedy appears to believe that the suffering of juvenile patients is a pointless tragedy, motivated perhaps by the cupidity of “science and the medical-pharmaceutical industry.” What a nasty world she lives in. I suppose the doctors are in on the money-making conspiracy. Perhaps they giggle in the break room at the naïveté of their trusting patients and wink at each other. How clever of Ms. Kennedy to call them out.

Without claiming that science is always perfect or that the pharmaceutical industry always chooses people over profit, I will say that people like Ms. Kennedy are part of the problem. Her letter is a simple-minded bleat of anguish that offers nothing to anyone. I hope it at least made her feel good.

Hello world!
